Modern Foreign Languages
Learning a foreign language not only encourages and improves communicative abilities, but also prepares students for the world of work and enhances their personal and cultural experiences. From Year 7 to Year 11, all students have the opportunity to experience and enjoy learning a language, and the school offers our students the chance to study French, German, and Spanish.
Students who arrive at Henry Beaufort in Year 7 study wither French or Spanish in mixed ability classes for six lessons per fortnight. At the end of Year 7 we offer approximately 50% of students to chance to study a second language in Year 8, depending on their progress and attainment in their first year. If students start with French in Year 7, they are offered German as a second language. If students start with Spanish, they are offered French as a second language. Students who are not offered a second language in Year 8 continue to focus on the language they started with. Every student studies a foreign language until the end of Year 9.
We have a high uptake at GCSE in French, German and Spanish and some students choose to study more than one language. We follow the AQA specification. Over the course of the GCSE, students will study topics from the following themes:
- Identity and Culture
- Local, national, international and global areas of interest
- Current and future study and employment
Students following the GCSE course will sit four examinations in listening, speaking, reading and writing with each accounting for 25% of the final grade.
Students are assessed in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. We teach through topic areas so that students can build a strong bank vocabulary and language; however there is also a strong focus on the grammar of each language. Understanding of the tenses, structure, and grammatical rules of these languages is engrained throughout the learning. As our students develop their skills, their use of language gradually becomes more challenging and complex.
Throughout our teaching, we introduce students to the cultural aspect of the different countries, teaching customs, tradition and the typical foods and drinks of the country and its regions. Annual events include The European Day of Languages for Year 7 and Year 10 A level taster sessions at Peter Symonds College. We have also established links with the University of Southampton and our students attend the Year 8 Able Linguist Day in the summer term.
The Henry Beaufort School has strong international links and many partnerships worldwide. See our International Links page for more information.
